BASEClimb 3 was reported in media around the world. Other than Australia it was mainly newspaper articles. The Today Show on Channel 9 in Australia presented a balanced piece. To see a Quictime Clip of the interview with host Jessica Rowe (who we found to be one of the better interviewers we've met) Jessica reported on her BLOG that the interview with Glenn and Heather was the highlight of her morning. Here's what she wrote - Tuesday June 20, 2006 "The highlight of my morning was meeting Glenn Singleman and Heather Swan. The husband and wife team have just set a new base jumping recording, leaping off a peak in the Himalayas… 6 600 metres up! I asked Glenn, why they do it, for most of us, everyday life is risky enough, but Glenn says he does it because it's a way to confront his fears. A fairly extreme way of confronting your fears- but it must give you the most incredible rush. Apparently their kids aren't too impressed by their parents antics and haven't given base jumping a go... Glenn and Heather are determined to find more mountains to climb, and then leap off… Good on them! See you tomorrow, Jess x" Channel 9's Newswas also a good piece. We did not find a copy but it lead to the first article in an Australian newspaper - The Sydney Morning Herald. To read the SMH piece CLICK HERE. The first web report was on Mt Everest.net. BASEjumping gets a lot of attention from the media, perhaps reflecting society's fascination with risk taking, whether you are for or against it. Unfortunatley accidents receive a disproportionate amount of attention. Every time there is a BASE accident or death it receives huge media cover across all platforms. A new World record and world first for women received far less attention, but the coverage was positive. The success of the expedition was the focus instead of the usual angles of 'isn't it too dangerous - isn't is an unacceptable risk etc.
In this section we'll keep an eye on what media from around the world are saying about BASEjumping specifically, and extreme sports and risk taking generally. October 21st 2006 : We are deeply saddened by the tragic death of Brian Schubert, one of the icons of BASE. Brian and Mike Pelkey were the first people to BASEjump El Capitan, a 900-metre-tall cliff in California's Yosemite National Park in 1966. Mike's account of the historic jump is covered on our BASE HISTORY page. Brian died jumping River Gorge Bridge during the annual Bridge Day festival. Our thoughts are with his family and friends.
Most recently there was a lot of local media attention for Cpt. Dan Schilling's new BASE World Record. Dan made 201 jumps from the Perrine River Bride in Twin Falls Idaho to break Gary Cunnigham's existing record more the most BASEjumps in one day. There are some of the press links for Dan's achievement..
